Uses of Garnet Abrasive

Uses of Garnet Abrasive

Garnet abrasive is most commonly used as a high-performance blast media, for the cleaning of aluminium and fibreglass structures. Because it is an inert, non-toxic, naturally-occurring mineral, garnet abrasive is also used on sites where water contamination is a concern, such as dry docks, bridges and harbours.

Garnet abrasive does not produce as much dust as other expendable abrasives, making it particularly suited for use in such confined spaces as tanks and containers.

Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives. This mineral group shows a range of hardness on the Mohs scale of about 7.0 to 7.5. Garnet sand is a good abrasive, and a common replacement for silica sand in sand blasting.

The environmental advantages of garnet lie in three aspects:

Less dust

When we use garnet sand in surface blasting, since garnet sand has a high specific weight, it generates less dust during blasting process, which guarantees safety of operators and improves visibility. In comparison, quartz sand is a kind of abrasive that is easy to be broken. During blasting process, it will produce large amount of harmful gas and hydrated silica dust polluting the environment. Once taken in by human, these dust may cause cancer.

Environmental protection

Different from conventional blasting materials, garnet sand is a kind of non-toxic natural mineral. Low consumption and recycling can also help reduce waste.

Recyclable

Garnet sand can be used in a variety of fields. Generally, it can be reused five times and more. When garnet sand loses its cutting capacity, it can be used as cement additive in construction industry.
